#ThisIsAmerica
Nydia Han, Emmy-Award winning journalist, shares perspectives on what it means to be an American
Nydia Han, a Philadelphia-based Emmy-award winning journalist and TV reporter, created a documentary series called #ThisIsAmerica in response to a stranger who yelled at her on the street, “This is America.” Nydia later posted a video response on Facebook, which was viewed 2.3 million times, and received 15,000 comments. #ThisIsAmerica is a digital series discussing issues of race and discrimination. It started in an intersection, turned into a powerful viral video, and is now a three part series.
Nydia describes the series:
Back in September, a Facebook video went viral. The video was my response to a driver who almost hit me during a green light in Philadelphia. The driver and I exchanged words about who had the right of way. Then as she drove off she yelled out her window, “THIS IS AMERICA.”
Those three words suggested to me that the driver did not see me as American. After a lifetime of letting similar comments just roll off my back, something inside me snapped.
It sparked a journey into the American experience and a real conversation about race. The making of #ThisIsAmerica took some unexpected, surprising turns. The journey made me think more deeply about myself and how I see others.
